Description
This program will begin with a 45-minute Behind the Scenes Tour of the aquarium's food-prep kitchen, laboratory and the top of the tanks, above the aquarium exhibits and as close as possible to over 150 sharks without getting wet! (Please be advised that for security reasons no photography is allowed on Behind the Scenes Tour.)
Our 45-minute Learn with the Sharks program will explore homes in the sea including ...
- discussing the make-up of coral and coral reefs and determine if they are a plant, animal, rock, or combination.
- exploring the diversity of living creatures and comparing the traits that allow them to grow, reproduce, and survive in different types of habitats
- explaining the effects that human actions have on coral reefs and discussing both the beneficial and harmful aspects on oceans.
- explore hands-on activities; including animal artifacts and touch tanks
Afterwards, we'll be free to explore the Aquarium at our leisure. You should plan to set aside at least 45 minutes to do so, and you may wish to bring along a camera and notebook with which to record your observations. Your admission is good for the rest of the day, so you may also leave to shop or eat and then return to explore some more. You'll meet Sand Tiger Sharks, Loggerhead Sea Turtles, Sandbar Sharks, Green Sawfish, a Shark Ray, a Giant Pacific Octopus, Cownose Stingrays, Jellyfish, Seahorses, Wobbegong Sharks, Clownfish, Nurse Shark, Alligator Snapping Turtles, Lake Sturgeon (aka Lake Shark), Starfish, Big Groupers, Live Coral, Hermit Crabs, Blue Tangs, Alligator Gar, and more. There are feedings at 4pm (Seahorse Kingdom), 5pm (Ocean Tunnel - Atlantis), 6pm (Rainbow Reef), and 6:45pm (Jellyfish Discovery).
Please note: This class is limited to 10 students. If the total number of people (adults and children) exceeds 17, we'll be split into two groups for the Behind the Scenes Tour, in which case one group will have the tour before the Learn with the Sharks program and the other will have the tour after the Learn with the Sharks program. If you need to be on one or the other, please let the organizer know in the comments.
