Description

The class will be using the curriculum "Life Through Time" by the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkely. Here's a link: http://lawrencehallofscience.org/gems/gemslifethroughtime.html  The curriculum involves the kids studying characteristic life forms for each of 5 periods in the history of the planet.

The date listed is the first date that the class will meet-- it will be every Weds from from 10:30 to 11:45 from 9/22/10 until 11/3/10.  The first and last sessions will be parent-led, and the middle 5 sessions will be taught by the education department of the Como Zoo, using resources from both the zoo and the arboretum.  Como Zoo is excited to offer this class to us.  A parent or other responsible adult must accompany kids to the first and last session, but kids may be dropped off at the Como-led classes.  The first class will meet at Unity Church (732 Holly Avenue, St Paul, MN 55104).  All other sessions will be at Como Zoo.

The curriculum is listed as a 5th-8th grade curriculum, but I think it could be valuable for a much wider age range-- I would say that an interested 6 or 7 year old could get a lot out of it (perhaps with help from a parent), and with some modification it could be worthwhile (although not rigorous) for high school students.  Como is open to modifying the course to work for a wide age range.  I have a copy of the curriculum, and would be happy to discuss it in depth, if you have questions.  In case it's not clear, this class will take the perspective that evolution is the most likely explanation for the diversity of life on Earth, and if that is not what your family believes, the class is probably a bad fit.

The class will cost a flat rate of $1250 for the group-- this cost will be split evenly among the enrolled students.  The cost of 83.33/child is based on meeting the mnimum enrollment of 15 children.  The maximum enrollment would be 20-- if enrollment exceeds 15, I will   calculate the new per child rate and issue reimbursements on the first day of class.  There will be 5 Como-led courses, and an introductory class and closing session that are parent-led.  Some activities may be sent home for completion between sessions.  All students will need a 3 ring notebook, folder or clip for their journal of their "journey through time" - pages will be added at each session, so a bound notebook is not ideal.

For the final session, the class will cooperate to create/lead a tour through time at Como.  Each student (or pair of students?) will be assigned a time period, and will need to find a plant or animal that represents that period at Como.  This doesn't have to take a lot of time, but may require an extra trip to Como.
