Get ready to roam the Wargo Woods as we search for signs of small mammals. Learn more as we tramp through the various habitats in search of tracks, foods, homes and more. Let’s get out there and seek out the miniature world of small animals.

Hibernation/Getting Ready for Winter
Animals, plants and humans need to prepare for the long winter months. We adapt by pulling out those winter coats, hats and mittens. What about plants and animals? How do they get ready for the winter? We will explore the different ways that animals, plants and humans “bundle” themselves up for the cold months ahead.

What minerals are hidden in your home? Why is Tamarack’s soil so sandy? What makes rocks a particular shape or color? You’ll be able to answer these questions and more after making edible rocks, playing geological games and hiking to the most remote corner of the nature center!

Birds eat a lot more than worms! Explore bird feeding styles as you use human tools to “eat like a bird”, hike to look for winter bird residents, and create a feeder to take home.

Winter Recreation: Nordic Skiing for Families
Minnesota’s winter weather has been unpredictable lately, but if we have 4 inches of snow, we’ll be out on it! You will learn the basics of classic Nordic skiing including balancing, how to stop and go, and going up and down gentle hills. You will be prepared to ski Tamarack’s beginner loop!
- Rental equipment available for an additional $5 (please arrive 30 minutes early to allow for check out procedure).
- We recommend you dress in multiple synthetic or wool layers, plus hats and mittens.
