This site seems to be aiming to have all the information you'd need to understand the geography and ecology of the Great Lakes region.  Most of the information is aimed at adults, but would be accessible to an interested child.  There is also a Parent/Kids section with information on the birds, fish, frogs, and more of the Great Lakes.

Winter Recreation: Nordic Skiing for Families
Minnesota’s winter weather has been unpredictable lately, but if we have 4 inches of snow, we’ll be out on it! You will learn the basics of classic Nordic skiing including balancing, how to stop and go, and going up and down gentle hills. You will be prepared to ski Tamarack’s beginner loop!

  • Rental equipment available for an additional $5 (please arrive 30 minutes early to allow for check out procedure).
  • We recommend you dress in multiple synthetic or wool layers, plus hats and mittens.

What does it take to survive in the wilderness? Get to know wild Minnesota and understand the impact that it has on humans in survival situations. Students have the chance to test out their survival skills by building fires and shelters using minimal materials.
