Description
J.A.S.S. Quartet's flight has been delayed, so instead of arriving this morning, they will not be in town until after the workshop is scheduled to happen.
This free workshop, offered by The Cedar Cultural Center as part of their Daytime Education Program, teaches the features of jazz music as J.A.S.S. Quartet performs and how they overlap with qaraami.
J.A.S.S. Quartet Classical Indian rhythms meet jazz and hip-hop from India and Los Angeles. Having trained with master artists in Indian classical and jazz, this quartet seeks to find a space for the classical and the contemporary worlds to come together. Carnatic raga, North Indian folk and classical rhythms, hip-hop phrasing and harmonic structures from jazz combine to create a distinctly evocative new sound.
Dalmar Yare began singing professionally at the age of nine. He is a founding member of Waayaha Cusub (Somali for “New Era”), a Somali music collective formed in Nairobi, Kenya in 2002 that became one of the foremost Somali music groups in the world. With lyrics and a message that challenge Somali warlords and extremist politics, Waayaha Cusub is recognized for its artistry as well as its activism. Facing threats in Kenya for the band’s outspoken lyrics, Dalmar fled to the United States in 2006. He reconnected with Waayaha Cusub member Hodan Abdirahman in Minneapolis in 2012, where they formed North America Super Stars (NASS), a collective of Minnesota-based Somali artists that perform in various configurations around the Twin Cities and beyond. In addition to performing with NASS, as full-time professional singer Dalmar performs solo at Somali weddings all over the United States nearly every weekend of the year. Because of their work with Midnimo, Dalmar was invited to lead a residency at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music with members of NASS in May 2015 that included performances and educational activities for youth and adults. The supporting band was directed by Augsburg College Music Department Chair Emeritus Bob Stacke and featured musicians and alumni from Augsburg Jive, the College’s renowned jazz band.
J.A.S.S. Quartet will perform as part of The Cedar's Global Roots Festival 2016 on Tuesday evening. Doors open at 7:00 pm, performance begins at 7:30 pm. This is a free performance, but reservations are recommended.
Palenke Soultribe Daytime Education Program
All workshop attendees are encouraged to also attend the free performance by Palenke Soultribe the following day, on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at 1pm. While reservations are not required, The Cedar appreciates your signing up in advance using the form below.
Palenke Soultribe Live electronic music trio fusing electronic sounds with Afro-Colombian rhythms from Colombia. The critically acclaimed LA-based Colombian electronic collective deconstructs Afro-Colombian rhythms, blending them with live electronic beats and exploratory synthesizer sounds. Known for their vibrant, energetic live shows, Palenke Soultribe represents the new generation of Colombian musicians ready to bend all the rules.
The Palenke Soultribe performance will take place at The Cedar Cultural Center (416 Cedar Ave S Minneapolis MN, 55454) and will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The content will be curated specifically for the age groups in attendance. The program will give the students a chance to learn about the band, and the band will speak about how they are inspired by their own traditions, implement theme and give their own twist to music and more technical explanation about how they create music. The band will also talk about their artistic process and inspiration, cultural background, and history through performance, discussion, and Q&A. This gives youth the opportunity to experience something new, to build an appreciation for music and art. The Cedar's Daytime Education Programs are truly one-of-a-kind and a chance for student to experience and connect with important musicians and cultural treasures.
