Ever wonder what it was like for children attending school in the early 1900s? Join us for class in the Dakota City Heritage Village's one-room school house. Children will sit in desks, use slate boards, have recess and do a spelling bee. The class will be taught by a school marm in period dress. Class lasts for two hours, and then students are treated to a tour of the village. The five-acre site includes 22 buildings where students can experience living history firsthand. Buildings include a church built in 1867, a bank, a barber shop, a hardware store, a railroad depot, a drugstore, a barn, a shoe/harness store, a general store, a 1900s era farm house, a post office, a print shop, a millinery shop, a school house, a town hall, a jail, and others. There is also the Ahlberg Heritage Center (a museum) that houses more than 10,000 artifacts depicting social and rural history with an emphasis on agriculture. Children should bring a sack lunch and will be treated to a free ice cream cone at the General Store. Children are encouraged (but not required) to come in period dress.
