#18 Casually telling a new/newly relocated homeschooler to start their own homeschool group...
This is a pet-peeve of mine. I live in the upper midwest, and finding space for large homeschool groups to meet can be difficult, and so many groups limit their size. The result is that new and newly relocated homeschoolers find out that there's a fabulous, active group in their neighborhood, but they can't join, and are advised to "start their own group".
New homeschoolers want to join an existiing group because they want to talk to experienced homeschoolers. Newly relocated homeschoolers want to join an exisiting group because they can barely find the grocery store and their kids are lonely-- they don't have the local connections to form a new homeschool group.
My feeling is that if you know that your homeschool group is the only one in your area, it would be kind to find a way to let new and newly relocated homeschoolers join in some capacity, and perhaps set up some spin-off groups based on age, common interests, etc... so that you can welcome more families.
I've never successfully started my own group. Those of you who have, please share your advice!
